Dear Ann Kristin – A while ago you said something about food at the Olympics that had me wondering…you said that a Norwegian chef was with the team so you were able to have “good Norwegian food”. Hmmm…do you mean our Canadian Poutine (fries, cheese, gravy, with a cardiac surgeon on the side) or Tim Hortons Donuts weren’t good enough?

After a bit of research, I’m having a hard time choosing my favorite authentic Norwegian dish. From the Lutefisk (fish soaked in lye) to the Smalahoved (boiled smoked sheep’s head) to the Sursild (herring soaked in vinegar), I’m, well…heading for the nearest McDonalds! I guess for “presentation appeal”, I’d go for the Smalahoved. Ann Kristin, if you can eat this stuff, you are tough enough to win any race!

It’s not hard to understand how the most popular Norwegian dish today is actually frozen pizza!

OK, enough stereotyping. I was trying to find some info on the upcoming race in Sirdal (thanks for posting it). Didn’t find anything on the race, but came across the company Sirdal Tradisjonsmat run by Torbjørg Haugen, chef to the national biathlon teams. And you are on the cover of her Cookbook…looking very authentic yourself!

I like the looks of the “Ole Einar Bjørndalen Salad”. Has she named a dish after you? Hopefully it’s not just the Komle; it should be a real zinger, like the “Ann Kristin Flatland Chocolate Explosion Fudge Cake”. Chocolate is an authentic Norwegian food, right? Smile

Good luck in Sirdal!

Hi Ann Kristin - great improvement to the site! It's clear and logical, and the archive material is much more accessible Smile ...but what about the Calendar?

Hi Ann Kristin - you're back! I was starting to get worried that you might have actually gone to Dubai to train. Sunnyboy said that you were spending the summer tanning and swimming by the seashore and--although you looked lovely and bronzed at Blink--you have obviously been doing a lot more than that! Other than the 2 week cold, from what I can understand of your news, you are pleased with your training progress...and that's great news!

I'll have to ask your site's "translation specialist", Knut, about what seems to be "gun" issues in your news. Hopefully, this doesn't concern the Butt this time, so there should be no confusion in the translation Smile

Obviously, even with gun issues, the poor moose didn't have a chance. I'm thinking of Knut's wise precaution, so I will be sure to wear my fluorescent yellow "road" jacket if I'm ever riding around your neck of the woods during hunting season.

However, so far in biking it has not been hunting which has caused me any danger. Three years ago, while biking on the Minnesing Trail in Algonquin Park...I almost ran into a young bull moose in rut--very majestic looking beast, quite black this one, with a brown tint showing on its sweat-soaked fur. About 10 m apart, we looked at each other for a few seconds, and thank god it didn't find me in the least bit attractive, suddenly taking off through the woods to find a much better looking mate. It is amazing, with the size of the rack, how fast and silently they can move through the forest! Here, the moose populations are being decimated in some areas in the south...not by hunters but by ticks. Some young moose can have 100,000 ticks on their bodies--which can suck out more protein than the animal can consume. The itching also causes the animal to constantly rub, and the removal of hair then causes winter mortality as well. Some point to global warming increasing tick range survival. Not good.

So, now climbing will be another thing you will excel at! And you're obviously not afraid of heights. There is a picture on your site of you standing in victory pose on that famous boulder wedged between two cliff faces--and there is a huge drop below. Fearless...and fearless in competition; fearless to believe that you will win!

Looking forward to more news from you and your continued success,

Chris

Hei, Ann Kristin!

Seier i hurtigskytingskonkurransen da gitt!

Mvh

Oh Ann Kristin, it looks like the Guestbook has been spammed! Sales must be pretty desperate for "replica handbags"—besides yourself, Ingvild and Liv Grete I don’t think there are too many handbag using guests on the site! In addition, we haven't even selected the Team Flatland Pant yet, let alone start looking though 1,500 fake Louis Vuitton handbags—it would take years to choose one.
Anyway, hope you can delete the entry…

Are you and the other biathletes are training with the nordic ski team at Meraker this month? I have been reading where the nordic skiers are doing less roller skiing and more running: hill bounding intervals or what they call “moosehuf’ing”--six minute intervals up steep dirt roads. That seems to have long been part of your individual training activity, and your strategy not to do a lot of roller skiing but other types of training.

Knut very kindly sent me video links for the Blink events—it was wonderful to see you in action and what an amazing effort in the last stage of both the semi-final and final race. It reminded me of the relay in Vancouver…you just poured it on! Great performance!

Best, Chris

Hei, Ann Kristin!
Lørdagens løp gikk noenlunde over samme lest. Litt rufsete skyting, men kanonfart i "sporet".

Hei, Ann Kristin!
Gratulerer med seieren i skyteduellen under BLINK-festivalen i Sandnes!
Tusen takk for flott "sesongstart", Ann Kristin!

Hi Ann Kristin – Back in May, I sent a Knut a summary of fan support on Facebook in an effort to encourage him to join…

It didn’t work (I think he is probably the wisest of all your fans).

Anyway, as it has been somewhat of a “slow news day” on your website Smile I have copied the summary below. It’s a bit sad there are no fan sites for members of the Canadian women’s biathlon team, but there is for the “Calendar”…Hmmm. And, Ann Kristin, look at the support for the PANTS! WoW! Think what can happen if you pick a Team Flatland Pant (or Short, or Skort, or whatever), actually WEAR them, and post some good action shots and hot fashion pictures on Facebook. I bet all my OSEBX shares at least 10,000 fans will sign up! Maybe even Knut!

FACEBOOK FAN SUMMARY
1,147,564 people are fans of Vancouver 2010
633,974 people are fans of the NORWEGIAN CURLING TEAM PANTS
143,259 people are fans of Lindsey Vonn (US Ski Team)
52,774 people are fans of Lara Gut (Swiss Ski Team)
38,818 people are fans of Aksel Lund Svindal
26,345 people are fans of Ole Einar Bjørndalen
9,880 people are fans Marit Bjørgen
1,200 people are fans of Tora Berger
843 people are fans of Ann Kristin (That’s You…Yahoo!!!)
295 people are fans of the Bold Beautiful Calendar (yes, THAT calendar!)
135 people are fans of Gro-Marit Istad Kristiansen

So, I guess Blink is the next big event. I’m not sure, but this seems like the World Cup for roller skiing biathletes? Anyway, all the best to you for this competition!!!

Den utsikten du her beskriver kunne nok mange ha misunnet deg, SunnyBoy...

Hi Ann Kristin – well, it seems deader than disco on this site. Have I missed something? Are you in some European Olympics and are “offline” again? Where is Sunnyboy and Juha and all the supporters from Vik I Sogn? Have all the Norwegians taken off for their internet-disconnected cabins in the mountains? I think I am now beating Knut for most guestbook entries in a row, and how can that be?

Knut has given me the day off today to celebrate our national holiday—Canada Day—despite the fact that my Flatland Challenge training has been in a shambles and race results quite poor. Our nation is now 143 years young, preceded by 10,000 years of First Nations settlement and, about 1,000 years ago, the first European settlement by your Norse ancestors in L’Anse aux Meadows, in the northern tip of Newfoundland.

I’m sure we’ll hear from you soon. Hope all is going well.

Happy Canada Day!

Dear Ann Kristin – I’m in Dubai and Abu Dhabi right now (on business; no tourist in their right mind would come at this time of year) and I thought I would try and get a Team Flatland group started down here.

It’s not going to happen…

It doesn’t matter how many World Championships you may have won or how beautiful you may be, it just isn’t possible. I made my way from the 44oC heat (can be as high as 49oC) to the indoor Ski Dubai resort—essentially a massive aluminum freezer laying on its side. I mean, really, why go to Norway or Utah to ski when you can go to Dubai? It makes so much sense!

Anyway, I asked the staff about renting some skate skiing equipment…“uh, you know, like cross-country skiing, only you skate” I tried to explain to the dumbfounded manager. They looked at me like I was from a different planet. “I guess you don’t know about Ann Kristin Flatland, eh?” I asked.

So, sorry, Ann Kristin, I tried, but you will get zero support from the UAE. I may try in Kuwait later in the summer, but don’t count on it.

You really should come down here to train—it would be worse than the ants!

Hi Ann Kristin - I came across this bit of Olympic history--don't know if it's true, but it certainly is interesting. You better keep up the 10,000 repetitions or Knut will be recommending this Ant-Hill technique instead!

“Famous Olympic Biathletes - Norwegian Magnar Solberg was an unknown heading into the 1968 Olympics in Grenoble. He was not favored to compete well, much less win. However, a bizarre and brutal summer training regimen devised by his coach allowed Solberg to concentrate on his shooting even under the pressure and exhaustion of the 20 km event. His coach forced him to fire at a target 50 meters away while lying on an anthill, with ants crawling into his clothes and on his face. Although not an especially fast skier, Solberg hit 20 of 20 targets. His perfection earned him a gold medal. He repeated at the podium four years later, taking gold despite missing two targets.”

Dear Ann Kristin – do you see what I mean with Knut! I don’t believe your national team coaches are this tough. In my defense, let me point out that he contacted my EX-wife. Saturday was actually a date, but that happens so infrequently I think of them as sort of weddings. And as you well know with your coaching of the youth, the kids can be quite a challenge. I find that the 4-year olds can run like hell and it is hard to keep up. As for the gym, the rides and the volleyball, well Knut has “nailed it down”…there is no escaping the truth and his “sharp eye”.

I guess I will just have to “suck it up” and keep trying. Overcoming setbacks and obstacles is part of the Flatland Challenge. If sitting on a bike with a beer doesn’t cut it, well I guess I just have to step up! But please, ask Knut to be a little easier on us softies over the ocean.

By the way, regarding the translation issue—yes it is correct that, in English, the word “Butt” has two meanings: referring both to that part of the human body that is used to rest on a seat, as well as that part of a rifle stock that is used to rest on a shoulder. When a problem with the Butt was mentioned in your correspondence, believe me, I knew immediately that it could only be the gun!

Hope all is going well.

Best, (still exhausted) Chris

Hi, Ann Kristin!
Let me first of all make Chris’ opening words my own! I hope your training is going well and that you allow yourself to relax when necessary!
Otherwise I have to comment some of the assertions mentioned in Chris’ posting.
I sincerely believe Christmas is the best time for relaxing. Summertime, with sunny days and comfortable temperatures, is time for training! When preparing for big races one cannot allow oneself to take some time of for all kinds of reasons. OK, Sunday is Sunday, but the week only have seven days. After all Chris, you are down to only three sessions Sundays! What do you think, Ann Kristin? Is this too much to ask? Maybe it would be better to go down to two sessions, at least once a month?
I was also a bit disappointed when Chris quit training early last Saturday, due to a marriage! Chris; I contacted your wife and she didn’t know anything about this! In any case she told me you got married on a Friday, NOT a Saturday! She also told me it was long time ago!

About the “wardrobe malfunction”: everybody knows that whenever one stops to “tie shoelaces” the main reason is to “steal” a moment of rest! It’s only a bad excuse, isn’t it! One also has to remember that some of the brakes lead to yet another “necessary” breaks. Is that really fair? During the training session Monday Chris stopped five times to drink, but six times to take a pee! How is that possible? Another thing Chris: What are the odds for breaking the chain twice during a two hour training session? Do you agree, Ann Kristin? It’s too much, isn’t it? I do not believe Chris’ training regarding sitting position is good enough either! What’s your opinion, Ann Kristin? Wouldn’t Chris benefit from training on how to sit on his bike cycling on a treadmill or even out in the terrain instead of practicing leaning against his garage wall, just sitting without any leg movements! Maybe a wind tunnel would be the very best option, but it may be out of reach for athletes outside the national team.

Regarding the episode with the “eye candy” I was somewhat in doubt what to decide, Chris. On one hand your training was a bit disturbed once she arrived to the treadmill next to you! I was a bit disappointed about that! On the other hand there are witness that your intensity was much higher than your average once she showed up! Maybe you made up for it Chris, maybe not! As mentioned before I was quite uncertain what to decide in this matter. Since it appeared you slowed down each time the “eye candy” looked at the athletic guy on her other side, and raised the speed only when she looked straight ahead (or once or twice in your direction) I decided to deduct.

Regarding the beach volleyball games Tuesday nights I find it questionable that the four latest games have been against female players only! And how is it possible to make a game you loose by 21-4, 21-3 last for two and a half hours? In beach volleyball each point counts, doesn’t it? You do not have to serve yourself to win a point!

One thing that really pleases me though is the result from the training session Wednesday. You didn’t do too well the first third of the slope, but the intensity you put in all seven laps around the nursery school was really impressive, Chris. It was told that your speed created enough movement of air to cool down some of the sun worshippers. You overtook thirteen rivals, improving your position to first! Shame you didn’t manage to keep your position for the last bit of the course, deep inside the woods. I read you are exhausted, both mentally and physical. But you still haven’t made your hours. Putting in a bit more effort the next period may give better result, Chris! I’m still optimistic on your behalf! I know you will manage it!

Mvh

Hi Ann Kristin - I hope your training is going well and that you are also finding time to relax.

My training, on the other hand, is not going well. As for relaxing...Knut says I can relax at Christmas. He is definitely one tough referee for the Flatland Challenge! He is "marking" my times very hard! (Are all the teachers in Norway this rigorous?)

Knut has assessed several "time deductions". Any MTB trail ride stop counts for time off: the "wardrobe malfunction" when my shorts got caught as I shifted behind the seat and almost completely dropped off (repaired them with a zip-tie); stopping to drink; repairing a chain break; taking a pee; etc. Every break gets deducted--a 2 hour ride now counts for only about an hour and a half! It's no better in the gym...Knut docked the time I spent looking at the "eye candy" next to me on the treadmill. That wouldn't be so bad if I could just get the eye candy to look back! Knut has also told me that the beach volleyball games on Tuesday nights may not count--too much "skin" and not enough "hardokt".

So Ann Kristin, what should I do! I'm listening to my body and its screaming: "for God sakes--relax!" Mentally, I'm a wreck. And I still haven't made my hours! Is one allowed to switch referees? May be Knut can be responsible for tracking YOUR time and I'll get Sunnyboy to be my referee Smile

By the way, how long is the Flatland Challenge to last...end of June?

Hi Ann-Kristin - I checked out a link you had mentioned before for training: the olympiatoppen.no site...and the 450 training videos! There is no doubt you have the training well in hand. And yes, by all means relax and listen to your body! However, I note that Knut has failed to mention this advice to me--I think he will be a tough referee for the Flatland Challenge!

You have covered physical training and shooting summaries in your blogs. But I wonder about mental training? Do you have a summary about what you have learned and achieved on this issue over the last 2 or 3 years? Something must have worked for you, as this is also an aspect of your rise to top-20 in the world.

I sense you have "toughened" and now, as a top-level, veteran athlete, you have learned to (as we say)..."suck it up". I think part of that is very quickly dealing with feelings that you recognize as counter-productive in competition (although they are so very honest and real), rather than dwelling on them. As an example I refer to your blog from Feb 12, 2008. Where before you talked very personally about regret and disappointment after poor performance (although also looking on the brighter side), you now seem to be much more "matter of fact" about performance issues.

But I'm just guessing--I may be completely off the mark! You may still feel exactly the same about performance that did not go so well as you explained back in 2008--just not had the time or inclination to write about it. What are your thoughts on mental training and what you have learned to achieve the level of performance you had in 09-10, and are you doing anything differently in preparing for the upcoming season? (Please...if you do respond, do so in Norwegian: I have the power of both Google and Knut from Karmoy for translation assistance.

Best, Chris

What an intriguing idea, Chris! Imaging if we all accepted this challenge, at our own level and pace, making whatever effort we would be able to put up with! Maybe this season will turn out to become the very best for all of us!
There is only one thing we must bear in mind, though - One of the reasons why Ann Kristin had her best season ever was that she managed to listen to her body and allow herself relaxation when necessary! I therefore suggest that Ann Kristin will continue to allow herself the same kind of necessary relaxation while we on the other hand try to carry through according to Ann Kristin’s original plans/schedule.
Let the “2010 Flatland Challenge” begin!

Hi Ann Kristin - what fantastic work you are doing with the young biathletes, not to mention providing your own financial contribution (Stør lokale talent). You have a big heart!! Knut mentioned that you have all the qualities of a great coach and teacher—I completely agree!

Wow—you went to “town” on the training info in the blogs. The planning aspect of your training is very impressive. But it makes me think: you will be doing all the hardøkt while we will get so much enjoyment when we watch you race—and race fast! It doesn't seem fair--we need to share the “pain” (and the gain…good quote Juha!).

This is what I'll do: for every month you train 75 hours, I will commit to do 7.5 (thank God for the decimal point!) in the gym and 17.5 on the mountain bike—25 hours. Whatever number of hours you do OVER 75 in a month, I will add this to my next month! If you train 79 hours, then I up my time to 29. If you train in the rain and sleet and hail and blowing wind, as some suggest, then I will double the amount again--33.

Knut will be the referee to keep me honest. I will also inform the local hospital to stand by.

Let the Challenge begin!

Hei, Ann Kristin!
Godt musikkvalg, forresten!

Mvh

Hi Ann Kristin - SunnyBoy is back as promised and, although he has no suggestions on the very important issue of the Pants Smile, he seems to have some good points. He certainly has a unique style of delivery!

I’m just back from riding the “rock” of the Canadian Shield (stickier than asphalt) and I agree with him very much on the MTB. Except for timed interval training on a road bike, I think the mountain bike is great for not only for the reasons SB mentioned, but also for grip and forearm strength and general upper body strength. The whole MTB thing is even better if highly technical (steep up and down), where you are out of the seat most of the time (better strengthening overall in that position anyway), and alternately pulling and pushing--basically "wrestling" with--the handlebars.

However, I can only guess that Norway's national biathlon team organization has the best coaches and trainers in the world, and especially since women and men are training together, you will be benefitting from the best training environment you can get. I wonder if our biathletes should train with you sometimes, like the Canadian and Norwegian alpine ski teams do (and have so much fun at the same time!).

Keep up the hardøkt!!!

Hva du leverte i vinden i fjorårsesongen nærmet seg nesten begredelig (ser man bort i fra Oberhof) - Kollen PU(4 bom), Kanthy SP(4) & MS(5)!! - i så måte lyver totalstatistikken for skytingen endel (Jada jada, i normale forhold er du fantastisk god, no doubt about it!).
Bruker dere videoanalyser?

Håper dessuten du setter deg noen (høye, men fullt ut realistiske) mål for 10/11-sesongen.
NO GUTS, NO GLORY!

God Tur til syden da... HAVE FUN!!!

Tongue

Hotel Cæsar, who needs it?....

Ahhh, It´s GOOD to be back!!!
